IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should You Take?

Understanding the Two Tests

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) are the two most widely accepted English proficiency tests for university admissions and visa applications. IELTS has been around since 1989 and is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge. PTE Academic launched in 2009 and is fully computer-based, scored by AI algorithms. Both tests assess Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking skills, but their formats differ significantly. Choosing the right test can impact your score and ultimately your admission chances.

Test Format Comparison

IELTS has four separate modules — Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes), and Speaking (11-14 minutes face-to-face interview). The total test takes about 2 hours 45 minutes. PTE Academic is a single 2-hour computer-based session with three main parts — Speaking and Writing (54-67 minutes), Reading (29-30 minutes), and Listening (30-43 minutes). PTE integrates skills, meaning a single question can test multiple abilities simultaneously. IELTS Writing requires handwritten essays while PTE is entirely typed.

Scoring and Results

IELTS scores range from 0 to 9 in half-band increments. Most universities require 6.0 to 7.0 overall. Results are available in 13 days for paper-based and 3-5 days for computer-based IELTS. PTE scores range from 10 to 90. A PTE score of 58-65 roughly equals IELTS 6.5. Results are typically available within 48 hours, sometimes within 5 hours. PTE's AI scoring means consistent evaluation without examiner bias, while IELTS Speaking is scored by a human examiner which some students find more natural.

Which Test is Right for You?

Choose IELTS if you prefer face-to-face speaking interaction, are comfortable with handwriting essays, need the test for UK visa applications (UKVI IELTS), or perform better with human interaction. Choose PTE if you are comfortable with computers, prefer typing over handwriting, want faster results, need flexible test dates, or find the integrated question format suits your skills. Both tests are accepted by universities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and most US institutions. For UK applications, only IELTS UKVI is accepted for visa purposes.
